Case description

For this project—the Caffettiera café in Montreal, Canada—all dining furniture throughout the entire space was custom-manufactured and supplied by our factory. The interior design draws inspiration from 1990s Italian retro aesthetics, featuring a dining area with a wave-patterned ceiling, a black-and-white checkered bar zone, and seating areas comprising colorful upholstered booths and casual loose seating; the overall concept emphasizes a lively, retro social atmosphere suitable for all-day dining.

The core challenge of this project lay in balancing a vibrant, unconventional retro color palette with the durability requirements of modern commercial furniture. The client sought furniture that would harmonize with the mixed textures of the blue-to-green gradient ceiling, natural wood walls, and terrazzo bar counter, while simultaneously avoiding the visual heaviness often associated with traditional retro furnishings. Furthermore, the uniquely shaped corners and curved booth areas required non-standard customization; given the high-traffic environment, special attention was needed to ensure that upholstery fabrics resisted wear and tear, and metal components remained scratch-free. We also had to ensure visual openness within the compact space and facilitate easy daily cleaning—requirements that standard off-the-shelf products on the market simply could not meet in terms of both artistic tonality and functional versatility.

To address these challenges, we implemented a strategy involving layered color replication and lightweight structural reinforcement. Through multiple rounds of color swatch matching and on-site prototyping, we custom-developed a palette of “Macaron” pastel fabrics specifically tailored to the space. We selected high-resilience, abrasion-resistant foam and scratch-proof metal frames, subjecting them to rigorous tests for abrasion resistance, stain resistance, and color fastness to guarantee long-term durability. For the curved booths and uniquely shaped dining tables, we designed lightweight steel bases featuring anti-wobble and noise-dampening treatments. We further optimized the curvature of the furniture lines and incorporated open-frame designs to reduce visual bulk while enhancing the spatial sense of openness. We maintained strict quality control throughout the entire process—from custom manufacturing to on-site installation—to ensure that the furniture seamlessly integrated with the space’s vibrant, retro atmosphere. Upon completion, the space features distinct yet harmonious color layers; the retro-styled furniture feels light and airy rather than oppressive; and the custom pieces in the uniquely shaped zones fit perfectly while remaining stable and durable. The furniture also facilitates simple and efficient daily cleaning, achieving a perfect balance between artistic expression and commercial practicality.

The client expressed high satisfaction with our custom services, commending us for accurately translating MRDK’s retro design language into reality. They praised our ability to successfully resolve complex challenges related to color matching, lightweight structural engineering, and custom fabrication for unique geometries, noting that our meticulous craftsmanship resulted in a flawless execution that perfectly marries retro vitality with modern commercial functionality.
