Case description

Located within an abandoned five-story concrete structure in Bangkok’s Sathorn district, this industrial-style restaurant features furniture for its primary dining areas that was custom-fabricated entirely by our factory.

The project was driven by the owner’s pursuit of an extreme “Brutalist-ruin” aesthetic—a vision requiring the furniture to visually coexist in deep symbiosis with the dilapidated, fractured textures of the original architecture. We were strictly forbidden from incorporating any sense of “newness” or traces of modern mass-production lines. Simultaneously, we faced the challenge of mitigating the inherent vulnerabilities of vintage-style furniture—specifically, susceptibility to decay and the risk of electrochemical corrosion between metal components and the aged building materials—within the demanding environments of a high-temperature, high-humidity open kitchen and a rooftop garden subject to ecological pressures.

To address these challenges, we implemented a “reverse-aging” process and a structural integration strategy. We subjected the modified dining chairs to specialized surface carbonization treatments to enhance weather resistance, and we developed a composite pigment coating designed to age in perfect visual synchronicity with the patina of the original cast-in-place concrete. These solutions successfully passed rigorous metal fatigue tests—simulating the harsh salt-spray environments of shipyards—as well as wood stability tests under extreme climatic conditions, thereby ensuring that the furniture retains long-term structural integrity while simultaneously embodying a distinct aesthetic of elegant decay.

The final result was remarkable: this bespoke furniture system dissolved seamlessly into the backdrop of the late 20th-century Thai municipal architecture. Beyond merely enhancing spatial coherence through textural echoes—such as the interplay between terrazzo surfaces and repurposed vintage light fixtures—the furniture’s exceptional durability successfully supported the complex operational demands of a multi-layered commercial venue. The owner lauded the comprehensive solution for precisely capturing the very soul of Brutalism, successfully constructing a sustainable dining space of immense artistic tension amidst the remnants of a bygone era.
