Case description

All dining furniture featured within the main spaces of the Water Bay 1979 clubhouse—located in Bangkok—was custom-manufactured and supplied by our factory.

The project’s objective was to recreate the vintage industrial aesthetic of the 1970s waterfront; however, the core challenge lay in reconciling the structural safety requirements of modern dining furniture with the use of authentic, aged industrial components. Specifically, the client requested the extensive integration of high-density vintage metal elements into the furniture frames. This design choice resulted in furniture weights far exceeding conventional standards, creating a significant risk of irreversible structural damage to the flooring during frequent, long-term relocation. Furthermore, given the clubhouse’s proximity to water, the joints of the metal components were highly susceptible to imperceptible internal corrosion—a condition that could lead to structural fatigue and compromise safety.

To address these issues, we implemented a lightweight honeycomb core substitution technique alongside an electrochemical sacrificial anode protection system. We filled the interiors of the vintage metal shells with aerospace-grade aluminum honeycomb structures; this approach drastically reduced the overall weight without sacrificing the visual impression of substantial mass. Additionally, to mitigate the risks associated with the waterfront environment, we discreetly installed—at every furniture joint—replaceable sacrificial blocks made of zinc-aluminum alloy. Through rigorous testing—including dynamic roller abrasion tests simulating thousands of kilometers of movement and precise stress distribution monitoring for heavy-load furniture chassis—we ensured that the furniture maintained impeccable structural integrity and operational flexibility while preserving its authentic industrial aesthetic.

The final outcome was highly successful. With its exceptional physical balance and profound craftsmanship, this furniture system—brimming with nostalgic tension—perfectly captured the soulful narrative of the clubhouse’s waterfront industrial heritage. It not only completely alleviated the owner’s professional concerns regarding structural load-bearing capacity but also earned high acclaim from the management team for our technical prowess in successfully resolving the complex engineering challenges inherent in realizing a historically authentic aesthetic.
