Case description
We provided Cantera Parioli restaurant with deeply customized furnishings, utilizing innovative applications of stone and leather to craft a contemporary dining space of striking visual intensity.
Situated in a neighborhood rich in cultural heritage, the project’s core challenge lay in balancing “extremely high guest density within a limited footprint against the potential for visual claustrophobia.” The client’s primary pain point was this: to ensure operational efficiency per square foot, the restaurant required a dense seating arrangement; however, this resulted in severely congested circulation paths, while the bulky structures of traditional tables and chairs visually fragmented the space. Furthermore, the owner faced a critical challenge regarding “environmental noise control”; the combination of hard wall surfaces and dense human chatter created significant echoes, severely disrupting the intimate conversational atmosphere expected in a high-end dining establishment. There was an urgent need to utilize furniture design as a means of acoustic attenuation.
We implemented a comprehensive strategy involving visual “lightweighting” and acoustic soft-upholstery interventions. To address the sense of spatial compression, we custom-designed cantilevered dining chairs featuring a “floating” aesthetic, alongside dining tables with ultra-slim frames. By shifting the physical center of gravity in their design, we minimized the visual contact points where the furniture met the floor, thereby perceptually “expanding” the floor area. To remedy acoustic deficiencies, we developed leather banquettes featuring internal cores with porous, sound-absorbing structures. Additionally, we discreetly embedded high-density acoustic cotton beneath the dining tables, leveraging the furniture’s own mass to act as a sound diffuser and effectively absorb mid-to-high-frequency vocal reverberations. In terms of materials, we selected matte-finish metals treated with a special cold-processing technique; this ensures that under spotlighting, the surfaces do not produce harsh glare, thereby maintaining a soft and pleasant lighting environment for dining.
The operators of Cantera Parioli reported that this comprehensive furniture package successfully created an illusion of spaciousness within a limited area; even when the restaurant is filled to capacity, guests still perceive a comfortable social distance. The acoustic performance within the space has proven particularly impressive; the environment—once prone to noisiness—has transformed into a tranquil and sophisticated setting. The owner remarked: “We delivered not merely functional seating, but—through the form and materiality of the furniture—established an invisible system of visual and acoustic optimization for the restaurant, elevating Parioli into the most distinguished dining landmark in the neighborhood.”
