Case description

As a benchmark for business hospitality under the Marriott brand, the Courtyard by Marriott Ahmedabad faced a dual challenge amidst the local climate—characterized by high humidity, heat, and dust—namely, how to effectively express its stylistic identity while ensuring durability. Our factory served as the exclusive supplier for the hotel’s entire suite of custom-made furniture, covering everything from guest rooms and executive suites to the all-day dining restaurant, conference spaces, and lobby lounge areas.

The core challenge of this project lay in adapting standardized business hotel furniture to simultaneously suit the local climate, cultural context, and the demands of high-frequency usage. Ahmedabad’s summers are intensely hot and humid, making furniture highly susceptible to moisture-induced warping, mold growth, and fading. Furthermore, while the hotel embraced a modern, minimalist aesthetic, it needed to seamlessly integrate indigenous Indian elements to avoid appearing generic or formulaic. Additionally, given the significant functional and atmospheric differences between guest rooms, dining areas, conference rooms, and public spaces, the design had to balance the need for a unified brand identity with the specific functional requirements of each distinct area.

To address these challenges, we developed a bespoke solution tailored specifically for this project. The furniture design is anchored by the brand’s signature deep brown wood tones and neutral color palette, featuring clean, restrained lines that naturally project an air of professional efficiency. Simultaneously, subtle details incorporate simplified interpretations of traditional Indian motifs, creating a harmonious dialogue with the local culture. To withstand the humid, hot, and dusty local climate, all solid wood components underwent specialized stabilization treatments to prevent moisture absorption, insect infestation, and cracking. Surfaces were finished with a specialized, weather-resistant coating designed to repel dust and stains, while upholstery fabrics were selected for their UV resistance, high color fastness, and ease of cleaning—collectively enhancing both durability and ease of maintenance. Furthermore, we implemented differentiated solutions for each specific space: guest rooms featured custom-integrated furniture designed to serve dual functions for both work and relaxation; the restaurant was furnished with comfortable, highly durable dining tables and chairs; and the conference and public areas utilized modular designs that maintained overall stylistic consistency while effectively meeting the diverse functional demands of these dynamic spaces.

Upon the project’s completion, the furniture proved to be in perfect harmony with the hotel’s overall aesthetic, creating a seamless blend of professional efficiency and local cultural resonance throughout the property—from the guest rooms to the dining areas. Since becoming operational, the furniture has maintained its structural integrity and pristine appearance despite the humid, hot, and dusty environment, remaining free from issues such as mold, warping, or fading. Moreover, the ease of daily cleaning and maintenance has significantly contributed to reducing long-term operational costs. According to the hotel management, this batch of custom-made furniture not only perfectly accommodates the local climate and the demands of high-frequency usage, but also strikes a harmonious balance between brand identity, durability, and a sense of local expression.
