Case description
Deeply rooted in the field of bespoke luxury hotel furnishings, we undertook a comprehensive, space-wide customization project for the Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa. Drawing inspiration from its unique geographical setting, we crafted a furniture collection that seamlessly blends French elegance with the rugged resilience of the alpine environment.
Queenstown’s extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations and intense UV radiation pose formidable challenges to furniture longevity. The client’s primary pain point lay in the inherent vulnerability of traditional French furniture: its delicate lacquers and intricate carvings are highly susceptible to cracking or peeling during the region’s dry, frigid winters. Furthermore, the hard-edged equipment carried by guests—such as skis and hiking poles—posed a constant threat of irreversible scratching to the furniture’s refined finishes, trapping the hotel in a cycle of perpetually high maintenance costs.
To address these issues, we implemented targeted technologies for moisture resistance, crack prevention, and surface reinforcement. For the solid wood side tables, vintage-style chairs, and sofas located in guest rooms, the lobby lounge, and the restaurant, we subjected the core wood materials to a rigorous, multi-month secondary curing and stabilization process. We also incorporated flexible mortise-and-tenon joinery to allow the furniture to naturally adapt to the physical expansion and contraction caused by the alpine climate. For the finishes, we applied an industrial-grade, scratch-resistant coating; while preserving the distinctive matte texture characteristic of French aesthetics, this treatment multiplied the furniture’s resistance to impacts from hard objects. In the spa and suite areas, the undersides of all furniture pieces underwent an invisible waterproofing treatment to prevent underfloor heating and ambient moisture from eroding the wood fibers.
The hotel’s operations team noted that, after enduring a full cycle of seasonal transitions—from winter to summer—this furniture collection has retained the structural precision and finish integrity it possessed upon initial installation, thereby significantly reducing the frequency of maintenance and repair work. The property owner remarked: “Amidst the rugged natural landscape of Queenstown, we have successfully safeguarded the refined soul of French design through robust, high-performance craftsmanship, providing the hotel with tangible assets that possess enduring commercial value.”
