A Rustic and Minimalist Thai-Style “Natural” Restaurant

Case description

For this rustic, minimalist Thai-style nature-themed restaurant situated in Chonburi, all dining furniture within the main dining area was custom-manufactured by our factory.

The project’s context was defined by two key challenges: Chonburi’s uniquely high-salinity coastal winds and the restaurant’s fully open-plan, timber-framed architectural structure. These factors rendered traditional solid wood furniture woefully inadequate in terms of resistance to termite infestation and the rapid drying and shrinkage of wood fibers. Furthermore, the restaurant sought to embody an authentic, raw Thai aesthetic, demanding furniture that—while completely devoid of any heavy, artificial surface finishes—could nonetheless withstand the permanent staining and corrosive effects of the highly pigmented spices prevalent in Southeast Asian cuisine. To address these requirements, we implemented a dual-pronged solution involving bio-enzymatic wood modification and a microporous oleophobic impregnation system. Through biotechnology, we altered the wood’s cellular structure to naturally repel harmful insects; concurrently, we developed a matte mineral protective coating designed to deeply integrate with the wood grain. This system successfully passed months of simulated coastal salt-spray testing and rigorous high-saturation curry oil penetration trials, ensuring that the furniture—while retaining the wood’s natural breathability and rustic tactile quality—possessed exceptional physical durability and stability.

The final outcome of the project was outstanding. Through a visual language that embraces a “return to nature,” the furniture collection seamlessly integrates with Chonburi’s coastal landscape. Beyond simply alleviating the owner’s concerns regarding the susceptibility of wooden furniture to wear and tear—thanks to its exceptional weather resistance—the collection garnered widespread acclaim for its minimalist and pure aesthetic, rooted in traditional Thai craftsmanship. It has since become a pivotal element in the restaurant’s narrative, serving as the very heart of its interpretation of a natural lifestyle.
