Case description

Rooted in the cultural context of “elite Shanghainese-style luxury living,” we executed a comprehensive, integrated project delivery for Shanghai Huazhou Junting—a landmark “villa king” property. Our scope encompassed bespoke furniture, artistic lighting, deeply customized sleep systems, hand-woven silk carpets, and a curated collection of fine art and decorative objects.

As one of Shanghai’s most iconic classical-style mansions, Huazhou Junting features a massive architectural footprint, with interiors characterized by intricate European-style stone moldings and ornate carved domes. The client’s primary pain points centered on a perceived “stylistic obsolescence and a spatial imbalance in the soft furnishings.” The owners wished to move away from heavy, dated traditional French furniture, yet feared that modern minimalist pieces would be insufficient to anchor the mansion’s imposing classical architectural backdrop. Furthermore, the mansion’s characteristic deep floor plan resulted in insufficient natural light in the central zones; coupled with the extensive use of stone flooring throughout the interiors, the acoustics felt stark and hollow—lacking the sense of serene, enveloping comfort essential to high-end residential living.

We implemented a strategy involving the deconstruction and reassembly of materials, paired with a scheme for acoustic softening and balance. To resolve the stylistic conflict, we commissioned bespoke solid-wood furniture featuring a mixed-finish technique and contemporary Italian proportions; by employing sleek metal accents to echo the intricate stone carvings, we used the “lightness” of artistic design to counterbalance the “heaviness” of the architectural structure. To address the lack of natural light, we sourced semi-translucent jade decorative elements with inherent luminous qualities. We also adopted a layered lighting scheme and utilized the high-thread-count silk fibers of our custom carpets to facilitate secondary light diffusion. To tackle the issue of echoes, we applied invisible soft-upholstery treatments to large-scale vertical furniture pieces and selected nano-composite fabrics with sound-absorbing properties, thereby concealing acoustic damping mechanisms within a minimalist aesthetic shell.

Feedback from the owners of Huazhou Junting: Following the comprehensive project delivery, the space has completely shed its former “showroom-like” monotony.
