Case description

We provided a comprehensive custom furniture solution for George Marina, a restaurant situated at a yacht marina in Amsterdam. By deconstructing the material elements of industrial heritage and waterfront lifestyles, we crafted a high-end dining space along the banks of the Amstel River that evokes a distinct resort-like ambiance.

As a large-scale waterfront restaurant located in the Amstelkwartier district, the project faced a core challenge: mitigating emotional detachment within a vast architectural scale while addressing the complexities of the interior microclimate. The client’s primary pain points stemmed from the restaurant’s soaring ceilings and massive industrial glass curtain walls; these features created an overwhelming sense of emptiness—reminiscent of a cold, vacant warehouse—making it difficult to cultivate the intimate atmosphere essential for high-end dining. Furthermore, due to its immediate proximity to the yacht marina, the interior furniture was subjected to the dual stresses of intense glare reflected off the river’s surface and frequent fluctuations in humidity. Consequently, standard furniture finishes were highly susceptible to light-induced aging and fading, while the acoustic reverberation within the expansive space severely compromised the privacy required for business discussions.

In response, we implemented a multi-layered strategy involving “enclosed islands” and a high-durability, tactile-focused material palette. To counteract the spatial emptiness, we designed a custom system of circular banquettes featuring high backrests that function as acoustic barriers. By leveraging the inherent scale of the furniture, we subdivided the vast open floor plan into multiple distinct “social islands,” effectively absorbing ambient noise while providing visual seclusion. Regarding material selection—specifically to withstand the rigors of a waterfront environment—we sourced semi-aniline leather treated with a high-grade UV-resistant coating. This was paired with hand-stained sustainable timber, ensuring the furniture retains its rich, vibrant color even under prolonged exposure to intense light. To enhance the tactile experience, we incorporated numerous brass components—chosen for their warm texture—alongside natural linen upholstery. Through the physical thermal properties of these materials, we counterbalanced the stark austerity of the industrial architecture, infusing the space with the warm, refined sensibility of a nautical lifestyle.

The George Marina operations team offered the following feedback: “This custom furniture collection successfully ‘softened’ our grand industrial space, transforming it into a cozy waterfront living room. The sense of enclosure provided by the banquette seating areas, in particular, allows guests to enjoy a private dining experience even when the restaurant is filled to capacity. Furthermore, the stability of the furniture materials under complex climatic conditions has been truly impressive; after enduring multiple nautical seasons, they retain the same exquisite texture and finish as the day they were delivered.” The owner believes that what we delivered was not merely tables and chairs, but rather a sensory-interactive system capable of modulating both the spatial temperature and emotional density—thereby helping the restaurant establish a benchmark of excellence for waterfront dining in Amsterdam.
