Case description
We delivered a comprehensive custom furniture solution for De Republiek Restaurant, reimagining the tactile qualities of natural materials to craft a coastal, human-centric space imbued with profound sensory depth.
Situated along a coastline defined by a wild, rugged atmosphere, the project faced a core challenge: “material degradation and a sense of spatial coldness within an extreme coastal environment.” The client’s primary pain points stemmed from the harsh conditions: prolonged exposure to high-salinity, high-humidity air meant that traditional solid wood furniture was highly susceptible to cracking or surface oxidation, while metal components faced severe risks of corrosion. Furthermore, due to the interior space’s soaring ceilings and extensive use of raw-textured concrete, guests often experienced a visual “lack of warmth” and a tactile harshness while dining. The owner urgently required a suite of custom furniture that could simultaneously withstand the corrosive forces of the marine climate and enhance the space’s sense of enclosure and comfort through the strategic interplay of material textures.
We implemented a multi-dimensional strategy involving weather-resistant material selection and the re-composition of warm, tactile textures. To combat environmental erosion, we sourced select, high-oil-content Indonesian teak and marine-grade stainless steel fittings. Utilizing vacuum-pressure impregnation technology, we infused marine-grade anti-oxidant coatings deep into the wood fibers, ensuring the furniture remained structurally stable even under conditions of extreme humidity. To counterbalance the architectural space’s inherent coldness, we commissioned a series of upholstered seating units featuring coarse-spun linen fabrics and thick, vegetable-tanned leather. Through the substantial weight and distinct texture of these surface materials, we delivered a dual sense of warmth—both visual and tactile. The edges of all furniture pieces were rounded and softened to eliminate sharp angles; paired with a low-saturation, terracotta-inspired color palette, the designs simulate the soft, transitional textures of a sandy beach amidst the interplay of light and shadow.
Feedback from De Republiek’s Management: “After enduring multiple seasons of exposure to the sea winds, this custom furniture collection has retained the exact structural integrity and material luster it possessed upon delivery. More importantly, the introduction of this furniture has fundamentally transformed the spatial atmosphere, effectively raising the ‘perceived temperature’ of the room; the highly enveloping design of the booth seating, in particular, has significantly extended the average duration of our guests’ stays.” The Owner’s Verdict: “By precisely mastering the extreme performance capabilities of our materials, we have successfully built a perfect bridge between the raw, rugged natural world and the refined elegance of our dining experience—creating a truly unique atmosphere of ‘wild luxury’ for our restaurant.”
