Case description

We provided deeply customized restaurant furniture for the Desert X AlUla Visitor Centre, achieving a symbiotic relationship between the furnishings and the historic landscape of AlUla through a precise balance of “reductive design” and “geological resilience.”

Situated at the entrance of an arid canyon, the architecture draws inspiration from local walled gardens and traditional sandstone carving techniques. The client’s primary challenge lay in reconciling “spatial evanescence”—the ability to visually recede—with “functional durability” amidst conditions of extreme light and shadow contrast. Given the building’s open-courtyard layout and reductive structural logic, the boundary between interior and exterior is highly fluid; consequently, the industrialized lines typical of standard furniture would disrupt the sense of purity inherent in a structure seemingly carved from solid blocks. Furthermore, the intense local UV radiation not only causes material fading but also leads to rapid heat accumulation on furniture surfaces in open and semi-open areas, resulting in a highly uncomfortable tactile experience. The owner urgently required a bespoke solution that could visually “vanish” into the sandstone backdrop while simultaneously withstanding high-temperature radiation.

We implemented a solution involving biomimetic rock-color extraction and a thermal diversion structure. To achieve visual evanescence, we conducted on-site spectral analysis of Hegra sandstone to develop a custom mineral-spray coating with a granular texture. Applied to the furniture frames, this coating ensures that the color and texture align perfectly with the sandy-hued walls of the walled gardens. To mitigate the risk of heat-related discomfort, we developed an “air-convection sandwich” seating structure. This design embeds insulating air pockets within the upholstery layers of the custom dining chairs; combined with specialized high-reflectivity fabrics, it effectively blocks thermal energy transfer to the seating surface, ensuring a cool and comfortable touch even under the scorching sun. The furniture forms eschew complex joinery in favor of a unified, streamlined design, thereby echoing the architectural philosophy of a structure carved from solid blocks.

The Desert X AlUla operations team provided the following feedback: This bespoke furniture collection successfully facilitates a seamless transition from the built environment to the natural landscape. The furniture appears as if it were—like the building itself—carved directly from the canyon rock, maintaining an exceptional level of visual and material consistency. Even amidst the high temperatures of midday, guests seated in the courtyard café area continue to enjoy a physically comfortable experience. Client Testimonial: We delivered not merely functional dining furniture, but—through a profound understanding of the local architectural context—a landscape art installation that “breathes” and dissolves seamlessly into the natural wonders surrounding it.
