Case Description
Our factory supplied the furniture for the office and academic spaces at Duke Kunshan University’s new campus.
We provided a comprehensive, custom furniture solution for the university, covering a wide range of areas: liberal arts research labs, collaborative halls designed to blur the boundaries between living and learning, reading zones within the digital library, and open-plan administrative wings. Our key products included modular, reconfigurable desks; integrated multimedia seminar tables; ergonomically designed, acoustically shielded workstations; and highly weather-resistant, artistically crafted public seating. By deeply integrating Duke University’s academic traditions with the sense of openness characteristic of modern Chinese architecture, we successfully balanced the functional logic of international-standard pedagogy with a living environment that seamlessly blends study and daily life.
A primary challenge inherent in the project’s background lay in resolving the spatial conflict between the absolute necessity for deep, quiet environments—essential for academic research—and the high-frequency, informal dialogue scenarios advocated by liberal arts education. The client’s specific pain points centered on the inability of traditional educational furniture to adapt to rapid mode-switching—from solitary, private research to spontaneous group discussions. Furthermore, the new campus features numerous floor-to-ceiling glass atriums; the intense natural lighting in these spaces imposed demands on furniture surfaces—specifically regarding UV resistance and anti-glare design—that far exceeded the requirements of standard office environments. The owners were also concerned that the furniture layout might obstruct sightlines, thereby diminishing the frequency of spontaneous, interdisciplinary interactions between faculty and students; they also faced significant challenges in managing environmental health and air quality metrics following the installation of furniture on such a massive scale.
To address these challenges, our factory implemented ultra-low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) eco-friendly manufacturing processes and a dynamic visual-damping solution. Regarding environmental safety, we utilized bio-based adhesives and zero-formaldehyde emission board materials; prior to mass production, all furniture underwent rigorous air quality simulation testing within a climate chamber to ensure full compliance with international “Green School” standards immediately upon delivery. In terms of functional adaptability, we developed a lightweight, pneumatic-assisted linkage mechanism that allows faculty and students to reconfigure individual workstations into a radial discussion cluster using just one hand, in a matter of seconds. To optimize the lighting and visual environment, we applied a micron-level matte, anti-reflective coating to all seminar tabletops; this coating passed rigorous anti-interference testing using a Class 100 gloss meter, thereby protecting users’ eyes while simultaneously enhancing the readability of digital screens. The project results demonstrate that the custom-designed furniture successfully transformed into a tangible component supporting the “Boundless Learning” philosophy; its tactile warmth and rational geometric lines perfectly resonate with the ethos of a world-class research university.
The client commended the manufacturer for leveraging deep insights into educational behavioral science to deliver a dynamic furniture system capable of self-defining the space. This system not only resolved the challenge of minimizing collaborative interference within a liberal arts education setting but also—through its exceptional eco-friendly performance—fostered a healthy, diverse academic community that instills a profound sense of belonging among faculty and students. The primary spaces encompass a multi-modal research collaboration zone, digital reading islands, a landscaped communal lounge, and an administrative and academic exchange center.
