The Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, Canada—a century-old landmark castle hotel—is renowned globally for its distinctive English Victorian charm and stunning West Coast natural scenery. Our factory exclusively designed and supplied the complete suite of custom-made loose furniture for the hotel’s guest rooms, executive suites, lobby lounge, and public salon areas.
At the project’s inception, the client faced a unique set of challenges: as a historic structure, the hotel’s renovation required the strict preservation of its elegant Victorian aesthetic while simultaneously meeting the functional and durability standards of a modern luxury hotel—a balance that standard reproduction furniture could not achieve, as it typically fails to reconcile authentic vintage details with commercial-grade durability. Furthermore, the Victoria region’s consistently humid and rainy climate—characterized by significant temperature fluctuations—posed a risk to traditional wooden furniture, making it susceptible to moisture damage, mold, cracking, and warping, while fabrics were prone to aging and fading due to insufficient weather resistance. Additionally, the furniture in the guest rooms, suites, and public salons needed to harmonize seamlessly with the building’s elegant architectural character; however, the unique spatial dimensions inherent to a historic structure made it nearly impossible to utilize off-the-shelf furniture, presenting an exceptionally high degree of difficulty for customization. Finally, the renovation project imposed rigorous requirements regarding furniture installation, spatial fitting, and schedule adherence, making the procurement of multiple furniture categories from disparate sources a high-risk endeavor prone to delivery delays and inconsistent quality.
Leveraging the capabilities of our own manufacturing facility, we developed targeted solutions to address these complex challenges. Our furniture designs faithfully recreate the elegant lines and intricate details of the Victorian era, utilizing warm wood tones, premium upholstery, and exquisite hardware, while simultaneously incorporating modern manufacturing techniques to ensure a perfect balance between vintage allure and contemporary sophistication. To counter the local humid climate, all solid wood furniture underwent specialized stabilization treatments to prevent moisture absorption and cracking; fabrics were selected for their UV resistance, water-repellency, stain resistance, and high colorfastness; and all metal hardware received anti-rust treatments, thereby comprehensively enhancing the furniture’s weather resistance and longevity. For the guest rooms and suites, we custom-crafted bed frames, desks, and storage units that fit the architectural dimensions with absolute precision; for the public salons, we designed sofas and coffee tables that embody both vintage elegance and modern comfort—preserving the building’s historical character while fully meeting the functional needs of modern guests. Throughout the entire process, we maintained rigorous, unified quality control standards and coordinated efficiently to align with the project’s renovation milestones. Upon the project’s completion, our entire furniture collection harmonized perfectly with the hotel’s century-old, elegant aesthetic.
