Case description

As specialists in custom furniture, we provided a comprehensive suite of bespoke furnishings for the Hilton Melbourne Little Queen St project—outfitting its historically rich lobby bar, boutique guest rooms, and signature restaurant.

Converted from the historic Equity Chambers building, the hotel’s interior retains a wealth of original plaster finishes and unique architectural geometries. The client’s primary challenge lay in balancing the preservation of this historic structure with the integration of modern functionality. Due to minor irregularities in the old building’s floor leveling—and given that many walls are protected structures where drilling is prohibited—standard off-the-shelf furniture would have been prone to instability against the walls or would have created visual lines that clashed with the building’s historic contours. Furthermore, the owner was deeply concerned about the furniture’s ability to adapt to fluctuations in wood moisture content within the building’s specific ventilation environment.

We implemented specialized adaptive leveling and stress-relief techniques. For items such as guest room desks, bedside tables, and the enclosed lounge chairs in the lobby, we designed fully concealed, micro-adjustable support bases. These physical structural mechanisms effectively compensated for the old building’s uneven floors without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the furniture. For the woodwork components, we employed a specialized “balancing layer” technology—embedding a cross-laminated fiberboard core within the solid wood frames—to significantly enhance the furniture’s stability and resilience within the historic building’s specific humidity conditions. Additionally, all furniture positioned against walls was designed with self-supporting structures, eliminating the need for heavy-duty reinforcement on the historic walls and thereby maximizing the preservation of the heritage site.

The hotel’s pre-opening team provided the following feedback: “This collection of furniture not only blends seamlessly into the vintage atmosphere but also successfully meets five-star functional standards while upholding the principles of historic preservation.” The application of adaptive structural designs significantly reduced the on-site installation timeline, effectively resolving the complex compatibility challenges that typically plague the renovation of historic buildings—issues that often prove to be the greatest operational headaches. The owner commended us as a “one-stop” custom furniture partner that demonstrates a deep respect for history while possessing exceptional engineering flexibility.
