Case description

Our factory provided a comprehensive custom furniture solution for Qualia Restaurant, furnishing the entire space—including the expansive, theater-like open kitchen hall, the extra-long curved leather banquettes, the central communal dining table, and the window-side seating areas. Our key products included dark-hued solid wood dining tables, bespoke teal leather upholstered chairs, seamlessly formed metal-frame bar stools, and wooden benches featuring industrial rivet details. By deeply integrating grand industrial scales with refined vintage materials, we achieved a delicate balance between the fluid dynamism of a “culinary theater” and the functional requirements of social dining within the highly dramatic space created by Serie Architects.

A core challenge inherent in the project’s context lay in managing sightlines across an exceptionally deep floor plan, as well as addressing the sense of spatial disproportion caused by the extreme ceiling heights. The client’s primary concern was this: the space is enveloped by a massive, undulating glass curtain wall and an exceptionally high industrial ceiling; given these overwhelming visual cues, furniture designs that were too slender risked being “swallowed up” by the sheer architectural volume, resulting in a space that felt empty and lacked intimacy. Furthermore, the restaurant’s central feature is an open kitchen spanning several tens of meters; the furniture layout therefore had to align seamlessly with this linear axis. Additionally, the owner was concerned that—given the open environment characterized by high humidity and heavy cooking fumes—the dark solid wood and leather furniture would deteriorate rapidly. They also worried that the large-span curved banquettes, lacking internal partitions for support, would be prone to central sagging over time, thereby compromising the high-end dining experience.

To address these challenges, our factory implemented a structural design featuring “gravity anchoring” and developed specialized surface finishes tailored for environmental resilience. To resolve the issue of spatial disproportion, we adopted a strategy of “architecturalizing the furniture”—increasing the visual weight of the furniture bases. Through the use of thickened solid wood frames and heavy-duty industrial-grade metal joinery, we endowed the furniture with sufficient visual ballast to ensure it maintained a sense of stability and groundedness even within the soaring verticality of the space. Regarding structural integrity, we developed a proprietary internal truss support system for the extra-long curved banquettes. This system successfully passed rigorous fatigue-resistance pressure tests—simulating loads three times the expected maximum—thereby guaranteeing that the banquettes would retain their perfectly aligned horizontal lines and structural precision even after years of high-frequency use. Tailored specifically for an open-plan kitchen environment, we incorporated a medical-grade anti-permeation coating and a deep-penetration grease-sealing treatment. The surface materials underwent rigorous high-temperature atomization testing to ensure that the furniture surfaces remain non-sticky and fade-resistant, even amidst complex atmospheric conditions.

The project results demonstrate that the custom furniture successfully serves as a visual anchor within the space, drawing people together and fostering a sense of community. The furniture’s profound, substantial texture creates a striking, high-tension contrast against the dynamic interplay of light and shadow cast by the rippled glass.
