Case description
We provided MISU Restaurant with a comprehensive, bespoke furniture solution, meticulously curating structural aesthetics and tactile materials to craft a dining space that embodies a distinctly contemporary Asian fusion sensibility.
The core challenge of this project lay in addressing the “acoustic hard-reflection and tactile coldness inherent in an industrial-heritage-style setting.” MISU Restaurant is situated within a space characterized by soaring ceilings and exposed concrete walls. The client’s primary pain point was that the expansive, hard-surfaced vertical planes caused severe reverberation of indoor voices—a phenomenon that significantly disrupted the intimate conversational environment essential for high-end dining. Furthermore, the raw, industrial architectural backdrop felt overly stark and cold, leaving guests lacking a sense of psychological enclosure and comfort during extended dining experiences. The owner urgently required a custom furniture system capable of balancing the spatial atmosphere, absorbing ambient noise, and providing a tactile warmth.
We implemented a strategy centered on porous acoustic absorption and the reintroduction of warm, tactile materials. To tackle the acoustic challenges, we designed and fabricated a custom booth system featuring integrated sound-absorbing foam and micro-perforated leather backrests; by leveraging the substantial volume of these furniture pieces as acoustic barriers, we effectively absorbed and diffused mid-to-low-frequency noise. Regarding material balance, we sourced natural walnut wood and high-thread-count blended fabrics, utilizing the inherent warmth and texture of the wood to counterbalance the starkness of the concrete. The edges of all dining tables were finished with large, rounded profiles and reinforced with concealed metal structures—a design choice that ensured exceptional physical stability while maintaining a visually slender and elegant aesthetic. Additionally, we selected low-reflectivity matte finishes which, when paired with directional lighting, created a serene visual focal point within the space.
The MISU Restaurant operations team reported that, following the installation of the complete furniture package, the space’s previously troublesome reverberation was brought under significant control; even when the restaurant is filled to capacity, guests can now enjoy a quiet and conducive environment for conversation. The strategic introduction of these materials fundamentally transformed the tactile “temperature” of the space, creating a captivating artistic tension between the furniture’s inherent warmth and the architecture’s industrial character. The owner remarked: “We delivered not merely aesthetically pleasing furnishings, but—through the physical properties of the furniture—solved the persistent acoustic issues that had long plagued this space, truly establishing MISU as a dining landmark that delights the senses in every dimension: sight, taste, aroma, and comfort.”
