Case description
As specialists in custom furniture, we provided a comprehensive suite of bespoke movable furniture for the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins project, outfitting its Executive Lounge, Art Atrium, and panoramic dining areas.
Situated on one of Melbourne’s premier commercial thoroughfares, the hotel’s interior design is characterized by a striking interplay between French elegance and a modern industrial aesthetic. Given the building’s atrium features soaring ceilings, the interior suffered from significant acoustic reverberation; the client’s primary challenge was that standard furniture failed to provide adequate acoustic shielding within such a high-ceilinged environment. Furthermore, the lounge area is designated for prolonged, high-level business negotiations; consequently, the client required furniture that—while maintaining a slender, visually lightweight profile—offered exceptional lumbar support to prevent fatigue during extended periods of sitting.
Our solution combined acoustic soft-upholstery techniques with a system of concealed ergonomic supports. For the high-backed curved sofas and wraparound workstations, we embedded sound-absorbing mineral wool within the backrests and internal bases; by leveraging the furniture’s contours to create natural acoustic barriers, we effectively minimized conversational interference within the open-plan spaces. Structurally, we eschewed bulky padding in favor of a custom-engineered serpentine spring system paired with varying densities of cold-cure foam. This approach achieved a perfect harmony between the furniture’s visually “slim” profile and its ergonomically “substantive” seating comfort, ensuring that business guests could maintain optimal posture and comfort throughout their negotiations.
The Sofitel management team remarked that this collection of furniture serves not merely as an extension of the space’s aesthetic appeal, but also as an invisible acoustic solution. The sense of privacy within the Executive Lounge has been significantly enhanced, while the furniture’s slender lines ensure the unimpeded flow of natural light throughout the interior. The property owners acknowledged that, through our deep integration of ergonomic principles and material acoustics, we successfully helped the hotel maintain its leading position within Melbourne’s ultra-luxury business hospitality market.
