As specialists in custom furniture, we delivered a comprehensive suite of loose furniture for the W Melbourne project—spanning the iconic W Lounge, trendy dining venues, and art-infused guest rooms.

The W brand is renowned for its rebellious aesthetic, and the design for its Melbourne outpost draws inspiration from the city’s distinctive laneway culture. The core challenge of this project lay in the furniture’s physical forms, which were characterized by extreme distortion and asymmetry. The client’s primary pain points were twofold: traditional woodworking techniques struggled to achieve the fluid, seamless curves demanded by the designers; furthermore, the extensive use of mirrored metals and fluorescent fabrics risked appearing visually “cheap” under Melbourne’s intense natural light. Consequently, the owner urgently needed a solution to bridge the gap between avant-garde styling and the realization of a premium, high-end finish.

We addressed these challenges by employing a combination of 3D digital sculpting and advanced composite coating technologies. Specifically for the uniquely shaped sectional sofas and irregular polygonal coffee tables featured in the accompanying images, we utilized 3D-printed molds paired with a flexible cold-bending process. This approach enabled the seamless, monolithic wrapping of complex curves, thereby completely eliminating any fabric bunching or wrinkling at the corners. Regarding the metal finishes, we developed a semi-matte, brushed nano-coating; this innovation preserved the industrial luster essential to the W brand’s identity while simultaneously eliminating visual glare through controlled light refraction—a technique that also served to enhance the tactile quality of the materials.

The W Hotels design team offered the following assessment: “This collection of furniture precisely captures the rebellious soul of Melbourne’s laneways. The execution of the uniquely shaped pieces, in particular, is of an exceptionally high standard, completely bridging the gap between the initial design sketches and the final products.” The owner further reported that the distinctiveness of this custom furniture has become a major focal point on the hotel’s social media channels. Moreover, the furniture’s robust craftsmanship has successfully withstood the rigors of high-traffic social events, achieving a perfect balance between artistic expression and operational longevity.
